Incredible effort tonight in a playoff level game under the lights at Pennsbury. Tonight was Night 4 of Homecoming Week. Our team had Wing Bowl Monday night, Powderpuff Tuesday night, and a wild and raucous Color Wars last night in the gym.
I didn't know what to expect out of our team tonight, knowing how little sleep the PW student body has had this week.
This was an intense, physical game. Pennsbury is a very good team. We felt that junior Liv Patete really changed the game in midfield, coming off of the bench. It gave us a little bit more physicality that we needed. Patete is a three-sport athlete, varsity basketball starter, and QB1 for our flag team. She still doesn't know how good of an athlete she is yet.
Our backline of Maddie McLaughlin, Kaiane Jayo, Maddie McGuckien, and JJ Lafferty were terrific. No one would know JJ Lafferty was a freshman watching her compete in that level of game tonight.
At halftime, we told our team that we weren't able to play soccer the way we usually do against Pennsbury, to their credit. It was going to be a dogfight, scrappy. We told them we'd have to win it on a set piece.
15 minutes into the second half, senior Maddie McGuckien connected with a Maddi Lazaroff corner ball for her team-leading 7th goal and Laz's team-leading 7th assist.
I'd also like to highlight the play in midfield tonight by freshman, Molly McEvoy. The motor that this kid has to play for 80 minutes in that intense and physical of a game is really really fun to watch.
We faced some adversity over the past week and we received a total team response tonight. The team can now relax and enjoy the weekend with the Homecoming Football game Friday and the Homecoming Dance on Saturday.
Good luck to Coach Chang and the boys tomorrow night!
