Molly McCann – Manhattan University (Lacrosse)
Major: Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Sciences
Final list of colleges: Manhattan, St. Joseph’s, Drexel, Temple
Reasons for choosing Manhattan: “Growing up, I always knew I wanted to play lacrosse in college, and when I was looking at schools, I knew I wanted to go out of state. Manhattan wasn’t originally my top choice or on my list, and they reached out. I loved the coaches. They invited me to campus. I saw their specialty is the engineering program because they just got a whole new engineering (facility) built. I toured campus, and I loved it. I loved how it’s 20 minutes from Times Square as well as the opportunity to play Division 1 lacrosse.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse at the collegiate level? “I’ve been playing lacrosse since I was in kindergarten, and I always wanted to play lacrosse in
college. But I ended up tearing my knee my freshman year of high school as an attacker. Sophomore year, I made the switch of playing goalie, and I committed that September to play at Manhattan. It’s been a lot, but playing lacrosse in college has always been a dream.”
Upper Moreland coach Kim Frantz: “Molly was a great goalie for us. We were lucky enough that she transferred into Upper Moreland after two years at private school. As a junior, she was an already recruited goalie and played JV for me, which is crazy, but it’s just the way it fell, and she was a great kid about it. She didn’t get frustrated, she wasn’t angry about it. She made the best of it, and she did really well. She transferred to Upper Moreland in January of her junior year, and with the transfer rules, we wouldn’t have been able to use her for playoffs.
“Molly works hard, and she deserves everything she got. She was an attack player in lacrosse and switched to goalie three years ago, which is kind of crazy. She’s learned the goalie position in such a short time, and then to turn around and be recruited to go to Manhattan is just really impressive. She’s athletic, she’s quick, and she can read the ball really well. Honestly, one of the things that helped her a lot was – she was an attack player, and she can see the play from an attack eye to know what’s coming. She knows how to read people’s bodies and things like that as they’re going to shoot and where they’re going to shoot. She just has quick reflexes. I think she has a lot of growth still coming her way – I don’t think she’s peaked yet because she’s so new to the goalie position, so I’m just so excited to see where she goes from here. She’s a great kid.”
