COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 6, SPRING-FORD 3

HATFIELD — Jake Weiner has had some big scoring games in his ice hockey career at Council Rock South.
But maybe none of them were as big as the five-goal game he had on Tuesday night against Spring-Ford in the first round of the AA Flyers Cup at Hatfield Ice.
He dominated the game from the first goal in the first period to the final goal in the third.
“He’s a leader,” his coach Joe Houk said. “He’s the best guy on the ice.
“If he keeps his head and plays his game, doesn’t over pursue or let his head get out of the game, (he can be great). Other teams know what to do with him - if they knock him off his game, he’s done.
“He accepted the two and 10 he got early on (Weiner was called for a check in the back and a 10-minute misconduct penalty). He came right back on the ice, and he was all about business.”
With the penalties, Weiner missed most of the first period and about six minutes of the second. But, when he came back on the ice, he scored his third goal of the game to give the Golden Hawks a 4-1 lead at that point.
“I just let it go,” he said of the penalties. “I had to let it go.”
So how do you seem to put the team on your back and carry it to victory?
“It’s a killer instinct,” he said. “I want to win. We’ve been knocked out the last three years, and I want to win more than anybody.”
Weiner got a lot of help from his defensive mates. Trey Prozzillo was outstanding in the net, and all the defensemen turned in stellar play.
“(The defense) blocked a couple shots that were big,” Prozzillo said. “Xavier (Prozorov) had one, Wes (Mallon) had a couple and Chase (Stratton) had a couple.
“He (Stratton) was all over the place. I just said to him in the locker room, ‘You saved me out there.’”
Prozzillo also acknowledged the contribution made by Weiner.
“Jake with five goals is really big,” the goalie said. “Hope he can do it on Thursday again. If he can, it’s no doubt we’re still going.”
Weiner returned the compliment to Prozzillo.
“He’s our goalie,” Weiner said. “He’s one of the best, the best goalie in the league.
“He’s my best friend. He’s a great kid and a great goalie. I’d rather have him on my team out of everybody.”
Houk, however, realized that his team, despite the win and the advancement in the Flyers Cup, didn’t play a perfect game.
“Was it our best game - no,” he said. “We had periods of greatness and periods of horrible.
“We were trying to do everything ourselves. We kind of got jumbled up because the lines were mixed up.”
As noted earlier, Weiner grabbed the spotlight early in the game. With only 2:07 gone in the first period, he took a pass from Jacob Cohen and put the puck past Spring-Ford goalie Nathaniel Grice on the power play.
Slightly less than five minutes later, William Hollis gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead and slightly more than two minutes after that, Weiner upped that margin to 3-0.
But the Rams weren’t out of it yet. Patrick Fergus beat Prozzillo at the 15:54 mark on the power play to cut the margin to one goal.
Weiner came out of the penalty box with more than six minutes elapsed in the second and got things going again. He scored his third goal of the game at 6:45 to give Rock South a 4-1 lead.
That didn’t last long. The Rams came back at 7:28 with Dylan Cyr scoring a shorthanded goal and at 9:58 with another shorthanded marker, again from Cyr.
“We gave up two shorties,” Houk said. “We can’t do that.”
The third period was all Council Rock South and Weiner. He scored both goals in the period to give the Golden Hawks some insurance and some breathing room and the victory.
South now advances to the second round. In it, the Golden Hawks will face a familiar foe, Central Bucks South, which has won its last two games against Rock South.
But Houk has a thought about that.
“It’s hard to beat a team three times in a row,” he said with a smile.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 4, DOWNINGTOWN EAST 3
Ryan Montagna scored three goals while teammate Joseph Slobodrian assisted on three, leading the Titans to a hard-fought win at Hatfield Ice in Tuesday’s second round.
The Titans led 2-0 after one period – thanks to goals by Nolan Senigo (Slobodrian/Ryan Frey assists) and Montagna (Owen Frey assist).
That 2-0 lead was cut in half when East’s Chase McKeown scored just over two minutes into the second period. Montagna got that goal back, using assists from Slobodrian and John Lord, but East’s Thomas Wolf had an answer, trimming the Titans’ lead to 3-2 after two periods with a late goal.
Montagna’s goal six minutes into the final period with assists from Slobodrian and Ryan Frey put the Titans on top 4-2, but East’s Colin Franciscus made it a one-score game with a goal with 4:37 remaining in regulation. The Titans held on for the hard-fought win.
Nathan Napolitano recorded 24 saves in a winning effort in goal. Downingtown East’s Lucas Fleuty kept his team in it, turning away 43 shots to effectively negate South’s 47-27 advantage in shots.
Central Bucks South will face Council Rock South in what promises to be an interesting battle Thursday at Hatfield Ice at 6:30 pm.

PENNSBURY 8, HAVERFORD 5
Shane Gleisner had a hand in five goals, scoring a pair and assisting on three others to lead the Falcons to an impressive opening round win over Haverford at Skatium Rink in Tuesday’s opening round. Jacob Sarver had a four-point night (3g, 1a) and Shane Hicks had a three-point game (2g, 1a).
The Falcons trailed 2-1 early but quickly turned the tide, opening up a 3-2 lead after one and extending that to 5-2.
Haverford scored a minute into the game, and it took just 35 seconds for the Falcons to even the score when Gleisner connected on an unassisted goal. Four minutes later, the Fords regained the lead, and that 2-1 score stood until Francis DeLucia found the net with 2:38 remaining in the period. Hicks and Connor Gray assisted. Less than a minute later, Sarver scored with a Gleisner assist for a 3-2 Falcon lead.
Goals by Sarver and Gleisner in less than a minute early in the second period upped the Falcons’ lead to three goals. Haverford’s joseph Cianciarulo scored with 4:28 remaining in the period, but Hicks got that goal back with 26 seconds remaining in the period to send the Falcons into the final period with a 6-3 advantage.
The two teams exchanged goals in the third period with Sarver and Hicks each scoring for the Falcons for the 8-5 final.
Pennsbury will face Boyertown in a second round game Thursday (6:15 pm) at Ice Line.

NORTH PENN 9, SHAWNEE 2
Eight players contributed to the scoring as the Knights turned in a workmanlike effort in their decisive win over Shawnee in Tuesday’s opening round at Hatfield Ice.
They took care of business in a hurry, opening up an early 3-0 lead. Gabriel Dunn opened the scoring with assists from Declan Willison and Danial Cabrales, and after Samuel Norton scored (Ismael Cabrales/Nolan Shingle assists), Dunn picked up his second goal, this one with assists from Danial Cabrales and Samuel Norton.
Shawnee got on the scoreboard with 4:32 remaining in the first period, but Shingle scored an unassisted goal with 38 seconds remaining to send North Penn into the second period with a 4-1 lead.
Shawnee trimmed that lead to 4-2 when Thomas Bowman scored three minutes into the second period, but goals by Chris Silvotti and Derek Lugara upped the Knights’ advantage to 6-2 after two periods.
The Knights closed out the game with three unanswered goals in the third period – one each from Silvotti, Shingle and Norton.
Aidan Quigley notched the win in goal for the Knights, turning away 22 of 24 Shawnee shots. The Knights held a 45-24 advantage in shots.
North Penn will face Owen J Roberts in a second round game Thursday (8:45 pm) at Hatfield Ice.

Souderton trailed 2-0 after a competitive opening period that saw the Bears hold a 12-9 advantage in shots. The Indians made it a 2-1 game when Max Ryon scored just over a minute into the second period, using assists from Matthew Cross and Evan Siegler.
Boyertown closed out the period with four unanswered goals to go into the final period with a 6-1 lead. Cross turned a Ryon pass into a short-handed goal with 5:51 remaining in the final period to make it a 6-2 game only to watch the Bears reel off six unanswered goal in the final 4:48.
