Here we are - the final round of playbacks of the PIAA District One 6A Boys Basketball Championships! Doing these predictions for the first time and seeing the tournament from a new perspective has exemplified its competition, strategy, and unpredictable nature for me, making the tournament fun to watch. Congratulations to all the teams who qualified for this year’s tournament, especially to the 15 qualifiers who represented the Suburban One League.
The semifinal round was tight as nails with all games but two being decided by less than 10 points. I can’t imagine this round being any different. As this round spreads across three days, I’m breaking up my picks between Friday and Saturday, with tonight’s three matchups in this part and Saturday and Sunday’s 3rd Place and Championship matchups tomorrow. Let’s get into it:
5th Place Final: #7 Spring-Ford vs. #13 Cheltenham: Unpredicted in my Round 4 picks, both teams notched huge wins to put them in the position to secure the 5th or 6th seed in the state tournament. Cheltenham has been on a roll this postseason as they ripped through the 6A District bracket as a “Cinderella” team with the signature overpowering offense. Spring-Ford snuck past a tough #6 Abington squad on Wednesday and certainly is hungry for more but at this time of year, I’m going with the streaky team in this offense v. offense matchup. 60-59 Cheltenham
7th Place Final: #6 Abington vs. #8 Garnet Valley: Both teams had playback games that went right down to the wire, with GV’s being decided by one point and Abington by two points. As I’ve noted throughout the tournament, Garnet Valley’s inability to get in a groove early has haunted them all season long and with Abington’s immense scoring abilities, I see them overpowering GV. 56-50 Abington
9th Place Final: #10 Conestoga vs. #24 Pennsbury: Conestoga and Pennsbury locked in the final two state playoff bids on Wednesday in two high-powered games. Pennsbury played the role of “upset kings” once again, knocking out the #4 Central Bucks South Titans and proving that their seed is just a number. Pennsbury has been on a tear, and I think they can hang and beat Conestoga in a tight one. 56-54 Pennsbury
