HATFIELD — “I think he’s the top.
“He’s probably one of our top point getters ever at Council Rock South.”
Those were the words of the Golden Hawk head coach Joe Houk, spoken about senior forward Jake Weiner after Weiner led Rock South to an 11-5 victory over Souderton in a Suburban High School Hockey League game at Hatfield Ice on Wednesday night.
And lead Weiner did. He scored four goals and added a pair of assists as the Hawks remained near the top of the National Division standings.
The first two points Weiner collected gave him 200 points for his career. Considering he has almost an entire season still to go, his point total should continue to soar. As of now, he sits atop the heap for the Golden Hawks.
Weiner passed off the accomplishment, giving credit to his teammates.
“That’s a great accomplishment,” he said of the 200 points. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the boys in the locker room down through the years.”
So, Coach Houk, how do you feel about your player?
“He’s a natural goal scorer,” Houk said. “He touches the puck, and it goes in the net.
“He’s like one of those guys that I’ve coached over the years in that he wants to be out there every single minute. Does not like losing. He’s a good teammate, a good captain.”
The two teams battled through the first period. Rock South took an early lead on a goal from Jacob Cohen, but the Indians tied the game on a tally from Pierce Miller and took the lead with a goal from Maxwell Ryon.
The Golden Hawks tied it up again with 2:26 left in the period when Allen Pronin netted an unassisted goal against Souderton goalie Alex Archer.
But all that changed in the second period. South scored an uninterrupted six straight goals before the Big Red finally broke through with nine seconds left in the second.
Pronin got his second and then Weiner stepped forward with two goals in the space of 3:30. And the Hawks just kept on hitting the nets, scoring three more goals by Daniel Holleran, Cohen and Aiden Guinter. Souderton’s Miller ended the run, but the score stood at 8-3 after two stanzas.
What happened in that second period?
“We woke up,” said Weiner. “We realized that we were the better team and we needed to show it.”
Houk delved into it a bit more.
“That’s our big problem,” he said, referring to the first period, “because we have always been coming out slow. We’ve got a lot of kids on the team this year with different levels of skill. If they put their minds to it, they can play.
“Once we started getting that confidence in the second period, the kids started to settle in a little bit.”
Souderton coach Ryan Uchniat had a different perspective.
“They found the middle of the ice,” he said, referring to South. “They exploited us.
“They had some great looks, some heavy shooters that came on quick.
“I think we gave up two or three goals in that second period. We go down 5-2, take a penalty and go down 6-2 and I think everything compounded.
“At that point, it was a matter of trying to make adjustments. We couldn’t slow them down.”
And the Hawks kept rolling in the third period. They scored three more goals while allowing two to Souderton and finished up the game outshooting the Indians 39-34.
In that third period, Weiner scored his third and fourth goals and added a pair of assists and Pronin got his third for a hat trick. Ryon and Drew Savrese finished up the scoring for Souderton.
