SOL Colonial

It was one for effort.
Souderton’s Megan Borro just stayed with it in the box off a corner kick by Aidia Manners midway through the first half of Tuesday’s SOL clash against CB South. That bit of persistence paid off when Borro was able to volley home what proved to be the lone goal of the match and a big three points in the standings for a Big Red side that’s off to a competitive start this season.
The Titans have been just as competitive and didn’t make it easy, but some key saves from Cam Lobel after halftime made sure Borro’s efforts paid off in what could be an important fixture in what is again looking like a top to bottom competitive Colonial division table.

Aidia Manners has been placing some strong corners, and Meg Borro rallied through a lot of back and forth to put the ball in the back of the net. Our defense made some strong adjustments for the second half. Cam Lobel had some key breakaway saves and rebounds to earn a shutout. Lily Heron had a very strong second half and kept creating chances for us but we just couldn’t get there to put away another one today.”

The Patriots found themselves on the back foot early Tuesday.
With the host Knights eager to earn a statement win on their home field, they came out flying and jumped out to a quick lead over the defending state champions. Challenged after a busy week and an extended holiday weekend, the Patriots got in gear and got back in the game.
Spurred on by a big afternoon from senior Mia Forney - the all-state striker and Maryland recruit posting a four-point day with two goals and two assists - CB East found its scoring touch including a breakout game for Delaney Ralph who bagged a brace.
While it didn’t show in the final line, the Patriots needed all that offense as their defense was tested quite a bit by a talented Knights group that’s given several quality foes all they could handle.

CB East coach Jake Nesteruk: “We went down early in this one and deservedly so. The scoreline isn't reflective of how good North Penn was in the first half of this game. They've got some really talented kids going forward and pressed us well as a full team, and I don't think I put our kids in the right spots to deal with it early. Thankfully, the response we got almost immediately was a great sign and glad we had the opportunity to learn a bit about ourselves today.”
--Capitalizing on chances: “Very proud of us finishing better in this one off of what we created, and thrilled for a kid like Delaney to come in, put in a really great effort for us, and score two in this one. I thought Mia did some really nice things today and Kiera and Mattie Williams put in some serious shifts in the center of the park, with a very good day from Ella Roumy joining from the backline. Quinn Reilley continues to be a spark for us when we need her.”
--Takeaways: “Overall, I thought we put together a solid effort against a team that typically gives us a tough game. After a furious start to the season, we will take a bit of a rest and regroup for a busy week next week with CB South, Pennridge, and Conestoga in front of us.”

The Rams brought a helping mentality to their attacking approach on Tuesday.
All six of their goals came via an assist and remarkably, all six goals and all six assists were tallied by a different combination of players. Senior captains Peyton Rabinowitz and G Howley each notched one goal and assist - the two Christopher Newport recruits linking up on one of the tallies - with co-captain Natalie Walter opening the scoring.

Pennridge coach Lucas Kriner: “It was nice playing a game with the wind at our backs. Everyone worked hard today, and I saw some new partnerships emerge that looked very promising - shows we are making progress in the young season. Early goals go a long way for helping minimize the load on our legs; that’s a big take-away lesson from this match.”
--Attack spreads it out: “Thoroughly enjoyed all the goals, so congrats to Nat, Voytko, Kylie, Peyt, G and Madalyn. Each of them had a great feed from a connecting pass that set them up to be successful. Big props to those on the score sheet with an assist, too.”
--Pushing forward: “Great to pick up the three points, but we can’t feel too settled in. There’s more work to be done. I know our veterans know that the difference between September and October soccer is significant, so we’ll need to keep getting better when we hit the training ground this week. Overall, so happy for the girls earning this W.”

Council Rock South 3, Pennsbury 0
A penalty kick can be a huge momentum factor in a match for either side.
Usually, it’s the offense benefitting as a free shot from 12 yards out doesn’t put the keeper in an advantageous position. However, when a keeper does make the stop on a PK, it’s an instant kick of adrenaline and deflating to the attacking side.
Clinging to a hard-earned one-goal lead with halftime looming, the Golden Hawks conceded a penalty kick under the lights Tuesday night. With Pennsbury poised to get right back in the match on its home field, CRS keeper Maddie Hyams stole the momentum right back with a pivotal save on the spot kick.
That was the spark the Hawks needed as they rode a brace from Lylah Day and a PK of their own from Anna Horn to a strong three-point effort on the road.

Council Rock South coach Nick Heim: “Going to Pennsbury is never easy, and tonight was certainly not easy. Jenna (Peters) always has them organized and playing hard so we knew it would be a battle. I thought we had a good game plan coming in and executed it well in the first 25 minutes. We generated some good chances, but Pennsbury’s goalie is really solid. Finally, Krissy Philip picked off a pass and transitioned a great ball to Lylah Day for a composed finish.”
--Hyams says no: “Pennsbury turned momentum in the first half and right before halftime drew a penalty. Maddie Hyams came up huge for us with a
saved PK to go into half 1-0. At half, we stressed getting back to the game plan, and I thought we did it well to start.”
--Hawks take off after halftime: “Halfway through the second half, Anna Horn was taken down from behind in the box and converted the PK. A few minutes later Zoya Joshua found Lylah Day on a splitting run for her second goal of the game. I thought we saw out the Pennsbury pressure well.”
--Takeaways: “Any road win in the league is a good one, so in that sense we are pleased, but we have some work to do. I thought at times we had mental lapses, but overall a solid opening to league play. Maddie Hyams was fantastic in goal and our back line was solid in limiting chances.”

The Indians hadn’t played in more than a week, but they brought plenty of energy in making sure they picked up the three points in the standings.
Isabel Diaz scored the game’s first goal just over three minutes into the contest.
“A through pass sent the CR North player down the right side - she took the defender to the endline and sent an ariel cross,” Truman coach Brian Gilbert said. “There was traffic in front of the net and goaltender Dani Gilbert came and got a hand on the ball to poke it away. However the CR center trailed the play and pounced on the rebound and put in the vacant net.”
Sparked by Diaz’s early goal, the Indians were off and running.
Sarina Igval netted a brace to lead the attack, which saw five players contribute a goal.
Truman’s Dani Gilbert recorded 16 saves in a busy afternoon in goal.

CR North coach Gavin Flannigan: “Having not played in 10 days it was good for the girls to get out there. I thought we did some good things with the ball and our energy and approach to the game were excellent. Truman played hard throughout the game and you can see the growth in their team and program from years past in terms of numbers and quality of play."
Harry S Truman coach Brian Gilbert:
--The game: “The first day of school is always a long day. For Truman, it was a much longer day having to host Council Rock North. Council Rock jumped out to an early lead and didn’t look back in route to a 7-0 win.
“I felt that we continue to improve and for the most part our players were in position, but the Council Rock girls’ size and skill prevailed. There were plays where we made the initial save and seemed to have our mark covered, but much credit to the Council Rock girls because they won the battles deep in the trenches and put the ball in the back of the net. Overall, it was very well-played, clean game and I don’t recall many fouls.”
Coach’s take: “It was a hot day and going down early, it would have been easy to give up. I give a lot of credit to our defenders because they gave it their all. Regardless of the score, they hustled and put their body on the line trying to prevent that next goal, treating each play like it was for the game-winner.
“Defenders Julianna Romer and Harley Palencik both made saves at the goal line. Logging nearly a full half in the heat, our center backs Bella Romer and Natalie Klimowicz were gassed and needed a breather. To start the second half, junior co-captain Gwen Marston demonstrated selflessness and stepped up to play center fullback. Marston is the team’s leading scorer, but there was no hesitation to play defense and she was effective. Her ability to play defense gave Romer and Klimowicz a chance to move up to midfield. Senior captain Lila Giunta who is primarily a striker, dropped back to play midfield and kept with her defensive assignments. I always preach progression over perfection, and I’m impressed by the versatility, with girls learning to play multiple positions.”

Lower Moreland 6, Upper Moreland 0
While the Lions put away three goals on each side of halftime Tuesday, it was by no means an easy win over the Golden Bears.
Lower Moreland’s defense, led by senior keeper Mariah Gazzara, remained steadfast in its pursuit of shutouts as the group posted its fourth straight clean sheet to begin the season. That’s given the attack plenty of chances to generate scoring opportunities, with the difference on Tuesday being that those chances were as even in quality as they were quantity.

LM coach Todd Hill: “Sometimes we win pretty and other times we win messy. Upper Moreland pushed us to win messy today, but our girls stepped up to the challenge and were determined to do whatever it takes. Senior goalkeeper Mariah Gazzara continues to refuse to allow a ball in the back of the net. All of that led to a really strong outing.”
--Finishing touches: “Assistant coach Greg Kroll has been working with the girls on placing the ball in specific locations when they shoot. UM did not make it easy to get there, but when our girls got an opportunity, they did a great job finishing with precision.”
--Standouts: “Freshman Arlee Kerrigan had a goal and an assist today. She is a really strong technical player, and it was good to see her grow in confidence. Senior Izzy O'Brien and Sophomore Evie O'Brien (not related) were really committed to staying solid in the center back position. In spite of a number of dangerous attacks by UM, they stayed really consistent in the back and met each challenge thrown at them.”
--Offensive balance: “Junior Emma Leibert continues her really strong play with two goals and an assist. Senior Shannon Mahon played a really determined game that led to a goal and an assist. And Sophomore Camlin Cowley had a strong outing with two assists of her own.”
UM coach Lisa Benvenuto: “We knew Lower Moreland would come out strong and organized—they’re a talented team with plenty of offensive firepower. Though they got on the board early, we responded well by controlling possession and stringing together sharp passing sequences to create our own chances. At halftime, we focused on tightening our structure and finishing our shots. We brought greater composure and urgency to the second half, generating several quality opportunities. Key performances included strong play from Brooklyn Kavanagh, Mia Meakim, and Julie Albert, along with a standout varsity debut in goal from Madison Moore.”

There was a little rust on the Panthers coming off the holiday weekend, but the team’s veterans made sure it didn’t come back to cost them.
All three of Tennent’s goals were scored by seniors while the team’s underclassmen took up supporting roles. Western Carolina recruit Lia Jablonowski broke the drought to help shake off the slow start, with classmate Olivia Jakimoski - off a feed from freshman Lily Walker - doubled the advantage before halftime.
Senior Bailey Kasner, ably assisted by sophomore Kaitlyn D’Ambra, wrapped up the three points on the table with the third goal after halftime.

William Tennent coach Elise Jara: “It's difficult to come off of a four-day weekend and play a game. Although we came out a bit slow, we picked it up and were able to score twice in the first half. Sarah Criss, one of our freshmen, played a strong game in center mid as did seniors Bailey Kasner at striker and Alena Beer at outside mid.”

The Spartans maintained their undefeated start to the season in a game that was closer than the score might indicate.
Rafaella Castillo, Karter Brady and Liz Hanushchak provided the scoring, the high-scoring Brady notching a brace. That didn’t mean any of the goals came easily, with Cheltenham’s keeper Caroline Graham on top of her game.
Springfield’s defensive unit has been as sharp as the attack so far this fall, the back line and keeper Olivia Gatewood recording their third shutout overall and second in a row.

Springfield Twp coach Chris Tomarelli: “Credit to Cheltenham, who came in with a defensive-minded game plan and a goalkeeper who was unbelievable all game. On the other end, our defense led by goalie Olivia Gatewood and including June Kirk, Maddie Decker, Annika Spratt, Julia Guicheteau, Alice Williamson, Natalie Hartman, Isabella Cortes-Castillo, and Leah Hyland secured their third shutout of the season. Outstanding effort from the entire group.”
Road tripping ahead: “Springfield is now 5-0, with seven of our next eight games on the road. I’m excited to get on the road, refocus, and keep competing. I’m proud of how we’ve started the season, but I know we can still get better. We travel to Plymouth Whitemarsh on Thursday, and that’s a team that has had our number the past two years.”

With each passing game, the Colonials are becoming a little less a “new-look” team and a little more of a cohesive group.
They’ve faced some different challenges and while a few of the team’s younger players and vets are starting to establish themselves, there are plenty of others also finding their time to shine. Tuesday, coming back off the holiday break, PW found itself facing another test after host Upper Dublin erased an early lead.
Senior Izzy Jackson, who had given the Colonials that lead, turned facilitator on Emma Meyer’s goal that put PW back in front and gave the team’s new stalwarts a chance to lock up the three points in the second half.

PW coach TJ DeLucia: “Big-time win from our group today at Upper Dublin. After a rough start to the game against Archbishop Ryan on Friday, we came and played really well today in the first half.”
--Jackson and Meyer step up: “We had a really nice team goal to open up the game where freshman Josie Marcella found senior Izzy Jackson outside the box and Izzy had a terrific finish. Izzy is a kid we expect a lot from, and it was only a matter of time before she got on the scoresheet. It had been coming. After UD tied it up, we answered back. Izzy found sophomore Emma Meyer who made a nice run into the box and Meyer earned her first varsity goal. Meyer is really starting to figure out what it takes to play Varsity soccer. She is much improved from last season and that is a credit to her hard work over the past 10 months.”
--Freshman finisher: “One minute into the second half, freshman Skylar Wawrzynek took a volley out of the air and finished it for her third goal in three games. The amazing thing is each goal for her this season has been completely different. She is getting better every game.”
--Defensive props: “A lot of credit to our freshman goalkeeper, Jules Rex, who made five saves today. Upper Dublin really threatened us in the second half and she was solid again back there. Our two centerbacks, both senior captains who also happen to be best friends, Maddi Lazaroff and Liv Patete, had a lot to do today and were very good.”
--Standout efforts: “Sophomore captain Molly McEvoy was our engine today in midfield. It was very physical in the middle of the park and her work rate in the second half helped us seal the win. In addition to Molly, sophomore left back JJ Lafferty and senior midfielder Soph Nagle were very good. JJ saved us multiple times 1v1 and Soph Nagle's energy off the bench continues to drive our team to close these games out.”

A fast start and a big night by Mya James propelled the Panthers to their first divisional win of the season.
James, a junior midfielder, had a foot in on all three goals including the game-winner she scored in the first minute. She assisted the second goal, then capped the night off with a strong finish in the second half while setting the pace for her team.
Just as important was the team’s defensive play, Quakertown recording its first shutout of the season while seeing players all across the pitch step up.

Quakertown coach Jon Gingrich: “We got a lot of positive play from multiple players on the team tonight. We wouldn’t have been able to win without the great energy and fire from our players throughout the game.”
--James takes charge: “A minute into the game, junior Shylee Williams got a nice run down the right side, put a great cross in and junior Mya James finished it in the back of the net. The second goal came 10 minutes into the half when Mya James crossed the ball in to junior Brielle Bailey who headed the ball in the back of the net. In the final minute of the second half, junior midfielder Emily Marzinke placed a great ball through the defense and Mya James took the ball to goal, firing a beautiful shot by the Abington keeper. Mya was attacking all night and was super influential in how the offense had success tonight.”
--Defensive standouts: “Sophomore center back Lacey Garner had a great game for our defense. She controlled the back line. She led our defense and was a big reason we kept a clean sheet tonight. Junior goalkeeper Lily Remick also had a great game tonight. She played strong, making good saves throughout the game and was a real positive leader on the field with her talking and making sure the defense were in the correct spots all night.”

The Trojans’ offense was dialed in from the start and didn’t slow down in picking up their second division win of the season.
Wissahickon has outscored SOL Liberty foes 13-1 through two fixtures. Kate Irani, coming off a four-goal game, opened the scoring 10 minutes in, then her teammates went to work around her with Emily Bennacef and Gianna Brown each tallied a brace.
Katelyn Thomson and Sophia St. Pierre rounded out the scoring

Wissahickon coach Chris McDaniels: “Wiss continued to work for attacking chances in the second half and was rewarded with goals from Katelyn Thomson, Gianna Brown and Sophia St. Pierre. Defensively, the Wiss midfield didn't allow much time for the opponent to organize attacks, and Kaylee Hammond had a strong game starting our attacks in possession from the back.”
