Wissahickon 5, Lower Moreland 4 (2 OT)
Madness.
That was the word, and it was an apt one, that Wiss coach Chris McDaniels chose to describe the second half of Tuesday’s wild crossover game with the Lions. It’s been a challenging start of the season for the Trojans but they showed plenty of grit in finding a way to win after Lower Moreland showed some serious heart of its own.
“Thursday, we lose a game at Hatboro where we let them score in the last three minutes, we were looking good and gave that game away late and today looked like we were about to do the same,” McDaniels said.
Gianna Brown, a freshman and Wiss’ leading scorer so far this fall, opened the scoring with a back post finish when the ball came across the endline early. A called foul in the box yielded a PK to Lower Moreland, which sophomore Emma Leibert converted to level the score.
Late in the half, eventual Wiss hero Sophia Stehlik netted her first goal of the day to send the Trojans to break up 2-1.
“We came out of halftime and got a free kick where Katie Hepler, one of our center backs, hit a beautiful ball right over the line,” McDaniels said. “She dropped it right at the penalty spot and Bailey Cohen took it out of the air, volleys into the corner so we go up 3-1.”
Freshman Evie O’Brien pulled a goal back for the Lions, but Wiss responded in turn when Katelyn Thompson got down the left side and slipped a ball to Ellie Miller for the finish. McDaniels lauded both players for their work on the play, Thompson for putting the ball in the right spot and Miller for hitting it perfectly from 15 yards out.
LM then turned to Leibert for some heroic efforts of her own. The sophomore forward was outstanding for her team, netting a hat trick and willing her side back into the game and toward overtime.
“They get it to 4-3 on a beautiful finish,” McDaniels said. “Hat’s off to her, it was ripped, hit the back bar and slammed down. Just a really nice finish.
“Inside of two minutes, they turn our defender off a throw-in, she had a nice turn, comes in and rips a shot that finds the top corner again.”
After a scoreless first overtime, the Trojans again manufactured a prime scoring chance in the second extra session.
“It was a carbon copy of our fourth goal, our left winger got in behind their right back and laid a really nice ball across to Sophia Stehlik, our senior,” McDaniels said. “She got on the end of it with her right foot from about 15 out and put it in the top of the net about four minutes into double OT.”

Wiss coach Chris McDaniels on the win: “The second half was madness. We certainly have to do a better job of holding a lead, but their finishes were really nice, we have to work to cut out those opportunities. We’ve been in a lot of games but it’s just been the mistakes.
“We’re out there scratching and clawing but a missed assignment on a corner kick, wrong positioning at the back post by a defender, we’re not doing some fundamental things really well and every time we make a mistake, it feels like teams are really punishing us for it.”
Team’s development: ”We’re mixing and matching pieces and trying to figure out something that works. Gianna Brown and Paige Etzler, my two ninth graders, have been fantastic, Paige is playing right back, and Gianna is up top and is our leading scorer.”
Props: “Ingrid Kasenchar did a really good job working in the middle part of the midfield today. She covered a lot of ground, made a lot of tackles, was good in the air, the sort of stuff that only shows up in a defensive stat sheet you never hear about. She’s super-fit and we’re asking her to do a whole lot of running and she’s always giving it her all.”
LM coach Todd Hill: “We had a disappointing double overtime loss to Wiss tonight. Their speed up top proved to be a challenge that we did not meet today. Our girls came out really lethargic and Wiss made us pay. In spite of a really slow start, our girls finished really strong. Sophomore Emma Leibert had a hat trick that included a really well-placed penalty kick and two goals near the end of the second half where she willed her way through several defenders before rifling both shots from nearly 20 yards. Additionally, freshman Evie O'Brien netted another goal of her own to keep us in the game.
“I am proud of the girls for not quitting when we were down two goals late in the second half. It was a disappointing finish. We will get back to work tomorrow to continue working towards growth and improvement.”
Next up: Wissahickon will be on the road at Council Rock North Thursday, and Lower Moreland will travel to Central Bucks West.

Abington 2, William Tennent 1
The ball hasn’t gone Abington’s way that often so far this season.
Some of those things - a shot striking the post, another off the mark or a service into the box and nobody there to greet it - were still there on Tuesday but the Ghosts finally got a couple things to go their way. Whether it was a near-miss by the visiting Panthers in the first half, senior Kiera Clemson mixing touch and power on her left foot on a long strike or senior Alexis Whaley getting on the end of a late free kick, Abington got some good fortune on Tuesday.
The results have been hard to come by early, and even Tuesday’s win wasn’t a clean one with William Tennent getting a late goal of their own, but the Ghosts are looking toward turning things up in the second half of their schedule.

Abington coach Rick Tompkins on the win: “We struggle to score goals, that’s our biggest problem. We’re working at it, we’re working hard at it. We were a little bit unlucky, we hit a couple posts, had a couple good shots that didn’t go. In the second half, we had the ball a lot, we just didn’t finish. Then we finally do get a lead, and you think we’ll just ride it out, then we have a defensive breakdown and give one back.”
Team’s progress: “It’s a good group, they’re fun. We’re working on the little things trying to get a little bit better every day. I started three freshmen tonight but they’re all making progress.”
Next up: Abington will travel to Neshaminy on Thursday, and William Tennent will be on the road at Pennridge Thursday.

A little change of scenery was just what the Knights needed.
After three straight shutout losses last week, North Penn went into crossover play looking to turn things around. A pair of goals from freshman Annaliese Marnien did just that, lifting the Knights to their first win since Aug. 27

Knights coach Mike Rio on the win: “After a good start to the season and then a rough stretch last week the girls came out and showed that they really wanted this one and jumped all over it from the opening whistle.”
Finding a goal: “It was a good team win, I felt like we controlled the game well and created some good chances. They played tough defensively and our first goal came when Anna received a pass from and beat a couple defenders at the top of the and hit a shot to the bottom corner from the top of the box.”
Second goal: “The second goal game when Paula played Anna with a through ball behind the defense and she was able to get the ball past their keeper after an initial save. Their goalie made a couple other quality saves and op which kept us from getting any more but I was happy with how we created chances today after struggling to find the back of the net in the past three games.”
Team’s effort: “It was a physical game too and Bensalem didn’t make anything easy for us and I was happy with how our girls matched their physicality as well. Defensively we were really aggressive today and didn’t give them any time in possession and along with Julia Fore in net today the girls posted a nice shutout.”
Next up: North Penn will host Springfield Twp Thursday, and Bensalem will be at home against Quakertown Thursday.

Central Bucks East 3, Council Rock South 0
The Patriots junior class is loaded with talented players, many of them recently announcing their future college decisions, and fittingly they put a stamp on one of the crossover slate’s marquee matchups.
Twins Ella and Taylor Roumy each scored a goal while Mattie Williams - the most recent junior to close her recruiting, announcing her commitment to Villanova on Saturday - put a finish between the sisters’ goals. Taylor Roumy and junior Ava Mignon also added assists.
Behind the goals was a strong team effort from back to front and one that was certainly needed against a quality Golden Hawks team that threatened plenty despite not having a goal to show for it.

CBE coach Jake Nesteruk on the win: “Really proud of our kids today for the result earned and the performance put into this game. CR South is always a tough game, Nick is as good of a coach as there gets and their groups have always found ways to make games really competitive. We've been a bit slow to start in games in terms of chance creation, but today we finished two really good opportunities that gave us some breathing room in a first half where I don't think we controlled that well. Those goals gave us a bit of space to see through some moments where we were tested in transition, where our backline had to make some key plays, and a bit of focus to get us to half.”
First goal: “Ava Mignon closed the ball down well in midfield which Ella Roomy picked up in the center of the park and linked into Mia Forney who did a really nice job today in some of her combination play for others and in chance creation off the dribble. The ball then went wide out to Taylor Roumy who drove at her defender and served a good cross into the box for Ella Roomy to get her head on. Great moment to see the twin connection come together, and this time on the opposite end than most expect. Those two do so much right for the program, and Ella has been stepping into a bit of a more advanced role for us, so to see Ella step forward and get that first goal to get us going was huge.”
Second goal: “The second goal came from a good rotation which saw Taylor and Mia drop deeper to pick up the ball. Mia took her space off the dribble and found a wide pass into Ava Mignon who dropped a ball from wide right to the far post for Mattie Williams who just made great contact on a header to extend the lead.”
Third goal: “Skyler Lipp stepped high into midfield to disrupt possession which Quinn Reilley then picked up, took the endline and got a ball in to the box with a bit of a deflection. Taylor Roumy caught it well out of the air and finished on her first touch low and hard to the right of the keeper.
“I thought we put together a really strong second half that showed in possession, in where we had the ball and chances created, just couldn't put the final piece together until the very end. As much as we had put our stamp on the second half, the last 10 of a game against a team like CR South can get nervy, so that third goal was huge for us.”
Takeaways and props: “This felt like a really good game between two teams early in the year and lots to learn from it. I thought Cece Hayes and Paige Dougherty in the back were just excellent today. Two really good performances on the ball and great decision-making defensively. I thought the way kids like Cece, Paige, Skylar Lipp, and Addie Langlois played today gives us the foundation and confidence for kids higher up the field to have great days to take risks and be creative, which we saw plenty of.”

Riley Karpinski was back with a vengeance.
The Titans senior forward is a Virginia Tech recruit and one of the most accomplished goal-scorers in the SOL. She’d been battling some injuries, and plenty of defensive attention, all season but finally had a breakout performance on Tuesday, netting a hat trick and powering South to its second straight win.

CB South coach Dana Cole on the win: “Riley had a face of determination up top today in her efforts to score. She proved herself today as one that cannot be stopped as she led us to a 4-0 win. Ella Parish and Liz Kelly came in and helped our defense hold the shutout along with Morgan Sowash and Lilah Dingas in net.
“Ashley Snyder and Abbie Bass came into our offense to stir the pot and keep us moving in the right direction helping us hold on to the win.”
Next up: Central Bucks South will host New Hope-Solebury Thursday, and Pennsbury will host Plymouth Whitemarsh (7pm).

Council Rock North 1, Central Bucks West 0
Council Rock North continued its unbeaten start to the season, but its eighth straight win did not come easily.
CB West has proven a tough foe despite its record and the Bucks pushed the Indians for all 80 minutes. North’s defense stood firm as a set piece provided the difference in what was another tight SOL battle between programs that always put maximum effort onto the pitch.

CR North coach Gavin Flannigan on the win: “A hard fought win again today. A CB West game is always physically tough and today was no exception, both teams competed hard for 80 minutes.
I think we were the more threatening team in the early part of the game. I liked the way we started, and we had some good moments and longer range shots that the CB West keeper dealt with very well.”
Game-winner: “We were able to score the winning goal on a corner kick from Sarina Igval, Amber Yuan redirected the ball across the goal into the far corner. I felt the game got a little messy and we didn’t play our best at times but the effort to defend, compete with West and stay disciplined late in the game was a determining factor. Credit to Reese Ludwig goal and our back four for another clean sheet.”

The Cardinals put their attack back in gear to kick off their crossover slate.
UD was powered by Bridget DiMartile and Emerson Smith, who each had a brace with DiMartile also adding an assist. The duo combined for the first four goals, all coming within the opening 17 minutes.

A soccer match can feel long at 80 minutes but sometimes just a few minutes can decide how it’s going to go.
Tuesday, the Hatters used a brief but very productive short sprint in the middle of the marathon to take control against the Golden Bears and get back in the win column. Hatboro-Horsham scored three times inside a five-minute window in the first half, taking advantage of some strong play on the wings to surge to a crossover win.

HH coach Chris Artman: “Great rebound effort by the entire team after a tough loss last Friday. From the opening kickoff we controlled the play. We did a great job of connecting passes through the midfield and changing the point of attack. We were able to get our outside players isolated one v one and took advantage of that.”
Starting the scoring: “On the first goal we got Lily Harvey one v one on the left side. She beat the defender and slid a ball across to Courtney Rinius who beat the keeper to open the scoring.”
Quick strikes: “The second goal came off a great individual play by Ryleigh White. She won the ball on the left side and took her first touch inside and got off a right footed shot to the near post from about 25 yards out. )n the third goal Ryleigh White slid a nice pass into Lily Harvey who had made a great run in behind the center back. She beat their keeper to the near post to take the 3-0 lead at the half.”
Adding a fourth: “At halftime we talked about keeping the pressure on as we expected UM to come out strong trying to get back into the game. We kept our shape defensively and were able to weather their pressure. We continued trying to isolate their outside backs. Lily Harvey made a nice play down the left side, beating their back, and played a great ball across the goal mouth. Lexi Cohen made a great run down the middle from the attacking mid and hammered it home for her first of the season.”
Props: “Our back line really did a great job today keeping everything in front of them. Leah Nelson has done a great job the last few games alongside Marisa Bennett at center back. We got great goaltending from Sydney Cassel and Alaina Daniels on the combined shutout.”
UM coach Lisa Benvenuto: “Our girls came out ready to meet their opponent and matched up well throughout the game. Unfortunately, a five-minute slump in the first half cost us, and we weren’t able to recover from it. In the second half, we regrouped and played with much more energy and determination, creating several strong opportunities. Despite our effort and improved play, we just couldn’t find the back of the net. Solid play from Jayda Rivera, Madeline Cox and Leah King today. We will continue to work and grow from each of our matches.”

Pennridge 3, Neshaminy 1
Pennridge and Neshaminy have met quite a bit in recent seasons and it’s usually a bit of a chess match when they do.
Tuesday, it was the Rams getting off the bus after a long ride and quickly shaking off any heavy legs in a quick start. As the season has neared its midway point, Pennridge’s front line has started to build up some depth and quality, which the Rams used to their advantage with each of its three goals coming from a different forward.
Gabriella Howley, “G” to most, was a catalyst notching an assist on Pennridge’s early opener then having her work to this point rewarded with her first tally of the season in the second half.

Pennridge coach Lucas Kriner on the win: “The long bus trip and a short warm-up could have spelled disaster, but the girls didn’t let that distract them. They had a really good first half. Second half, we let our concentration slip a little bit at times and allowed too much freedom for some of Neshaminy’s dangerous players that we identified in our preparation. Altogether really happy with the win.”
Capitalizing on scoring chances: “The build-up to Peyton and Mikayla’s goals hit all the markers we like to see: quick movements, a good read on the developing opportunity and the ball traveling into dangerous areas. To get the third goal off a counterattack shows we were ready to sprint and give maximum effort at the right moments of the game. You have to be dedicated to the idea of sprinting when it’s required, so credit to all the players involved in that transition. G (Gabriella Howley) had a lot of work to do to beat the keeper to score her first of the season. She stayed really calm in that situation and showed she’s a composed veteran with a lot of minutes on her resume.”
Standouts: “Props to the forwards today: Emma, G, Erin, Mikayla, Liv and Cam really worked hard to press as a forward unit. Emily Hensler and Kendra Palena did a great job in midfield. Both have done a lot of great work for us.”
Next up: Pennridge will host William Tennent Thursday, and Neshaminy will host Abington.

Plymouth Whitemarsh 6, New Hope-Solebury 0
PW rebounded from its first loss of the season with a focused effort and a fast start on Tuesday.
The Colonials, who were plenty involved in some of the school’s Homecoming Week festivities on Monday, wasted little time in turning chances into goals and showed they weren’t going to overlook any fixture on their schedule.

A back-and-forth game saw the Panthers rally late to force extra time before capturing a home field overtime win.
It was a pair of sophomores at the center of things for Quakertown, with outside mid Shylee Williams filling the role of hero by assisting the equalizer before putting away the extra time winner. Sophomore forward Anna Gingrich scored the tying goal and also had Quakertown’s opener before the Spartans found their stride in the first half.
Springfield Twp put plenty of pressure on the hosts, building a 2-1 lead in the first half and scoring early in the second half to force the hosts to chase the game most of the second 40 minutes.

Quakertown coach Jon Gingrich on the win: “Our team never gave up today. Our heart and grit today got us a great team win.”
Williams’ impact: “Shylee Williams was super clutch for us today. Shylee assisted the tying goal and scored the winning goal in overtime. She was constantly getting down the right side of the field. Shylee’s speed was unstoppable, and her persistence paid off for us late in the game and in overtime.”
Props: “Anna Gingrich was relentless for us in this game. She scored two goals and helped get us into overtime with a well-timed run to score the tying goal in regulation. Anna was putting on a ton a pressure on the Springfield defense but her ability to hold up possession from the striker position gave us a huge advantage today.
“Senior Jewel Renshaw had an outstanding game. We flipped her from holding mid to center back and then moved her back to holding mid and moved her up to attacking mid throughout the game. Jewel added an assist on the first goal of the game but her solid play all over the field was a big reason we were able to get this win today.”
Next up: Quakertown will travel to Bensalem Thursday, and Springfield Twp will host Mount St. Joseph in a non-league game Wednesday.
