SOL Colonial
Souderton 3, Pennridge 1
It had been a while.
The last time Souderton beat Pennridge, it was a pretty significant result, the Big Red downing the Rams in overtime in the 2019 PIAA Class 4A title game at HersheyPark Stadium. In the six years since, Pennridge had won 12 straight in the matchup, with quite a few of them one-sided.
Monday night’s contest started well for the hosts, with senior G Howley staking Pennridge to an early lead, but this is a Souderton team with a different mindset.
“This team truly earned this win today in a very physical and fast game,” Souderton coach Melissa Lollar said. “I have to give a lot of credit to Pennridge for their fight, but our girls definitely met that well and showed a lot of grit. We really learned how to stay composed and play as a unit tonight.”
Megan Borro, who scored the deciding goal last week against CB South, came up clutch again to tie the game a few minutes before halftime. Big Red then took control in the second half, applying plenty of pressure on the attacking end and reaping the reward with goals from Kylie Cummings and senior Hannah Beckett while the defense and keeper Cam Lobel held firm to pick up a huge early season win and hand Pennridge its first setback.

Souderton coach Melissa Lollar: “After giving up a goal early in the first half, the girls kept their heads up and stayed patient to create chances. We really started to piece our play together in the second half.”
Putting on pressure: “Avery Cross, Lily Heron and Cailee Cush all had incredible games up top pressing their backs and keeping the ball to create chances. They were able to earn us some set plays to help with their efforts and tested their backs a lot.”
Team efforts: “Aidia Manners, Hannah Beckett, and Megan Borro had strong games in the middle of the field, winning 50/50 balls and distributing well. Defensively, Julia Purvy and Maddie Moreland really took away opportunities from their wide players and also distributed well to our attacking players.”
Defense holds its ground: “Kylie Cummings and Lilly Fisher played a strong game and were able to prevent their strong attack from getting many chances. Cam Lobel, once again, was so reliable for us in net. Overall, it was such a strong team win against a very good Pennridge team.”

The last two teams standing in PIAA’s Class 4A last year, the Patriots and Titans had their first meeting since the state final on Monday.
While both teams have changed from the squads that clashed four times last year, there’s still an abundance of talent on both sides. CB East’s seniors were the difference, with Kiera Sleicher scoring in the first half and Mia Forney adding an insurance goal after halftime but just as vital were the contributions from vets in other areas of the field like Mackenzie Peters, Rylie Leedy, Cece Hayes and the returning Taylor Roumy.
While the score did favor East, the Patriots had plenty to be wary of from the Titans’ attack and if last year was indication, their return matchup on Oct. 13 may not be their last.

CB East coach Jake Nesteruk: “Really proud of the group and their effort put into this one. We knew South can be a threat on transition and Charlotte Manley is such a talented kid going forward, so I thought we did a very good job in building some long stretches of possession, match control and created some good opportunities in both halves. I thought it was our most complete 80 minutes so far this season, and it showed in where much of this match was played.”
Patriot props: “It was great to have Taylor Roumy back on the field and she added a needed spark in the final third along with some great stuff going forward from Kiera Sleicher and Mia Forney despite the defensive attention she draws. I thought Mackenzie Peters and Rylie Leedy gave us their best games so far this season which was really good to see. We're thrilled to pick up a clean sheet in this one and much credit to Cece Hayes for anchoring us across the back.”
Challenges ahead: “A really big week for us as we head into Pennridge on Wednesday and Conestoga to round out the week.”

North Penn 0, Central Bucks West 0
It was a slugfest at War Memorial Field on Monday.
The Bucks and the Knights have played tough all year, even if it hasn’t always shown in their final scores, so it shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise that they put together 80 tightly contested minutes in their first meeting this fall. It was a night owned by the defenses, a couple special efforts from West goalkeeper Avery Jones helping to keep it a level contest.
While neither team scored, both left with a point in the table and some good things to keep building on.

CB West coach Bree Benedict: “North Penn is always a difficult conference matchup, and tonight was no different. We knew a major part of the game would be decided in transition moments, and I thought our players made a real commitment to one another to play CB West soccer, recover centrally behind the ball, and stay disciplined in our defensive shape.”
Midfield steps up: “Our midfield group of Amber Madden, Sophie Borgmann, Addie Herman, and Ella Barrett was fantastic in its work rate both going forward and recovering defensively. Addie and Sophie, in particular, did an excellent job managing a very talented North Penn midfield player and limiting her opportunities to get clean looks at goal.”
Bucks defense holds the line: “Our back line also showed a lot of toughness and made several critical defensive plays. Ava Menard probably saved a goal in the first half off a North Penn corner. I’m still not entirely sure how she managed to get a foot to it, but she cleared a ball that looked destined for the back of the net. In the second half, Avery Jones came up with an incredible sequence of three saves to keep the game level.”
Attack finds positives: “Going forward, I thought our forwards did a good job connecting with our outside midfielders and helping us get into dangerous areas. Credit to North Penn’s back line as well. They were organized, disciplined, and made it difficult for us to turn some of those promising moments into clear chances. It was also great to have Olivia Barrett back on the field tonight. She brings experience and another dimension to our attack, and we’re excited to have her working her way back into the group.”
Takeaways: “Overall, I thought we executed the game plan at a high level against a very good North Penn team. We’re young, but we’re growing, and there is a lot for us to build on from this performance as we prepare for Souderton on Wednesday.”
North Penn coach Mike Rio: “A super hard-fought game, physical and a really good battle. Props to West, they had a really strong defensive shape, and we weren’t able to break it down. Annaliese Marnien had a great chance that their goalkeeper made a great save on and then saved Madi Morrow’s follow up attempt, which was really one of the biggest moments of the match.”
Knights defense keeps it even: “Our defense played a solid game as well to keep a zero and Julia Fiore was really aggressive cleaning everything up. It was definitely a hard-fought game and one that we can take some positives from as we head into the next one. Proud of how the girls fought and I think we are starting to play more consistently defensively and now we just need to translate some of the possession and attacking time that we’ve had into more quality chances.”

SOL Liberty
Upper Dublin 2, Wissahickon 0
The Trojans had been on a roll with three straight wins, but a backyard rivalry game is never predictable.
It was host Upper Dublin coming out ahead on Monday, the Cardinals getting a pivotal penalty kick stop from goalkeeper Evie Steigerwald early in the second half to maintain the one-goal lead that junior Maya Schulz had given them. Even then, the result was in doubt until the final minute when Emerson Smith put away Kayla McNamara’s corner kick.
With three games on tab this week, it was just the start the Cardinals wanted and needed in what’s becoming an interesting SOL Liberty table.

Upper Dublin coach Darius Gbunblee: “This was a full team effort, and I’m very happy with the way the girls played. We have a tough three-game week ahead of us, so I wanted us to start on the right foot, and the girls did exactly that. They came out focused, competed from the opening whistle, and showed great determination throughout the game.”
Breakthrough moment: “A special shout-out to Maya Schulz for finishing a great pass from freshman Violet Swaka to give us the lead. It was a great team play and an important moment in the game.”
Cards defense gets it done: “I also want to recognize our defensive line that had a shutout, featuring Brooke Elner, Morgan Welsh, Shannon Connaughton, and Bailey Fichter. They did a tremendous job defensively and helped keep us organized and composed. And of course, a huge shout-out to our goalkeeper, Evelyn Steigerwald, who came up with a big penalty-kick save to help us maintain our lead.”

Quakertown 3, Plymouth Whitemarsh 3
The visiting Panthers and host Colonials had a barn-burner on Monday, PW thrice rallying back from a goal deficit to pull a point in a fixture both teams felt like they could have gotten more from.
Mya James had another standout early season effort for Quakertown, scoring the third goal for her team after assisting the first two. James set up both of the Panthers’ first half goals with corner kicks, Ellie Stanziola heading in the first just two minutes into the game and Brynn Gillin knocking in the second for a 2-1 lead in the 26th minute before she took it herself in the second half with a solo run and finish off a Brielle Bailey throw-in.
While the Colonials were a little bit off on the defensive end, they brought plenty of fight with them. Molly McEvoy put forth a huge effort of her own, earning a PK that Liv Patete put away to tie it 1-1 before delivering the equalizer. In between, it was freshman Peyton Hammond earning an equalizer for her first varsity goal to make it 2-2.

PW coach TJ DeLucia: “Kind of a bizarre game today against Quakertown. Two minutes into the game, they scored. One minute later, Molly McEvoy makes a driving run down the left side and is tripped from behind in the box. Liv Patete steps up to take the PK and ties the game. Later in the first half, we gave up another goal - in similar style. It's been a long time since we've given up goals in this fashion so we're really going to have to improve there. Shortly after they took the 2-1 lead, Quakertown tried to clear out a ball into the box and freshman Peyton Hammond struck the first-time clearance for the first varsity goal of her career.”
PW standouts: “Our three captains stood out today: senior center backs Maddi Lazaroff and Liv Patete and sophomore midfielder Molly McEvoy. Molly had a goal and assist drawing the PK. Patete had a goal and Laz had an assist. But, it wasn't just on the scoresheet; Molly was a one-person show in midfield and Laz and Patete held it down defensively against a dangerous Quakertown attack.”
Takeaways: “I think both teams left the game a little bit frustrated with a tie but we were down two starters so we had to piece it together throughout the game. We will take half the points and hope the Varsity experience today pays off for some of our younger players down the road.”
Quakertown coach Jon Gingrich: “Today was an up and down battle for us, PW always gives us a tremendous fight. Both teams had opportunities, but the score shows how both teams wanted that win today. One of the reasons I love playing in this division is that every team brings it when they play against each other.”
Panthers props: “Junior Mya James had a goal and two assists off corners today. Mya also just missed the game winner late in the game when she had a great shot that hit the post. Mya has been huge for our team in the early going of our season. Senior Brynn Gillian had a goal off a corner, but she was really great in the middle of the field. She found gaps all over the field to show support for her teammates and was really big today taking balls out of the air to help deflate the PW attack.”

The Ghosts picked up their first win of the season on Monday.
Addy Doyle and Valerie Zapata, two of the team’s top returning offensive players, contributed the goals.
Abington coach Rick Tompkins: “We scored two nice goals. Addy Doyle converted a drop pass from Sophie Regan to open the scoring and Valerie Zapata headed in a corner kick served by Mia Sarro. Samantha Waterfall recorded the clean sheet in her first varsity win.”
SOL Freedom
Lower Moreland 6, Cheltenham 0
A hat trick from Shannon Mahon powered the Lions as they got back in the win column.
Lower Moreland’s last outing was a tough draw against a good Harriton side, but Monday was just a pivotal for the three points in the Freedom standings on the line. Plenty of contributors stepped up to make sure Lower Moreland stayed in the mix ahead of a key showdown with Springfield Twp coming up later in the week.

Standouts: “Sophomore Ella Fey who played a really aggressive game as an attacker. She was so determined in how she attacked today's game. Also, senior midfielder Katina Pittaoulis played a really smart game today. She was very creative in how she passed the ball, setting up many of our players with great opportunities. Lastly, Ava Demarco was so solid, playing a number of spots in the back for me. Ava was dominant in whatever space she was playing.”

The Spartans’ defense has been stellar this season.
It’s been a challenge for teams to even score on Springfield Twp and that notion held up on Monday against a New Hope-Solebury squad that has played stronger than its record would indicate. With the offense getting back on track after battling a tough PW side last week, the Spartans remained perfect in the division ahead of a key contest with division co-leader Lower Moreland later this week.

Props to the Lions: “Credit to New Hope for playing hard until the final whistle. I’ve known Coach (Chris) Shank for a long time, and I have no doubt he will turn that program around. I reminded him today that just two years ago we were winning six games, and we matched that win total today. It’s a great reminder of how much work can change a program.”
Big test ahead: “Wednesday is a big one for us as we travel to Lower Moreland. It should be a great matchup with the opportunity to take the lead in the Freedom Division.”

The Panthers came out clicking on the attacking end, getting some much-awaited payoff for the ball movement and chances they’ve been generating in front of goal.
Five different players found the back of the net, showing the depth and balance the Panthers feel like they’ve developed on the attacking front. Defensively, Tennent was able to keep the Golden Bears from finding a similar rhythm and picked up a quality result.

UM coach Lisa Benvenuto: “We struggled to find our rhythm today. While we put together a few strong passing sequences, we couldn't capitalize on our chances. Showing up strong for our side were Julie Albert, Jayda Rivera, Keiley Hawk, Emily Skinner, and Gracie Costello with their standout play.”

Council Rock South 1, Neshaminy 0
It was a good day to have Lylah Day.
The Council Rock South junior put it on her foot to be the difference maker in an always tough battle with Neshaminy after her teammates did the work to put her in that spot. After receiving
the ball, Day made a nice move to slip a defender, was a step quicker to the ball and hit a composed finish for the only goal. That was all the Golden Hawks needed thanks to a standout defensive effort against a barrage of Neshaminy set pieces for an important three points in the division standings.

CR South coach Nick Heim: “We hosted Neshaminy in what is always a battle. They play tough, don’t back down from 50/50’s, and really put pressure on you when in possession. A credit to them buying into their coaching staff. We thought we had a solid game plan heading in, and early on, we began generating some quality movement with possession. We just seemed to lack that final touch to find a goal and were a bit disappointed to not capitalize more in the first half.”
Team effort sparks a goal: “Sophia Smith won a 50/50 and found Anna Horn, who made a quick pass to Brooke Pavlow. Brooke was able to find Lylah Day in a seam and Lylah beat one
defender before slotting it home to the corner. Much needing breathing room to head into the break 1-0.”
Set piece barrage: “In the second half, we continued, but as the game opened up a bit, Neshaminy generated a lot of set pieces in our end. They’re very dangerous in the air and in those clearance scrums, and despite our best to stay out of them, we found ourselves having to defend a few of them a little too close for comfort. Our back line held strong in front of Maddie Hyams for the shutout. Kait Hickey, Krissy Philip, Maddie Mohr, Lianna Shikhvarger, and Zoya Joshua helped withstand some serious pressure in the final moments.”
Takeaways: “I thought Pavlow was great today on the ball for us in possession amidst a hard pressing defense. All in all we have some cleaning up to do but a win over a program of that caliber is always a plus.”

Pennsbury came into Monday’s game against the Tigers with a clear directive.
“Today’s focus was on creating possession and letting the shots and opportunities come from it,” Falcons coach Jenna Peters said. “The girls did a great job putting that into action, moving the ball, creating chances, and getting a lot of players involved.”

Harry S Truman coach Brian Gilbert: “We are a young team with a lot of fight, but the size, skill and experience of Pennsbury showed today. The Pennsbury girls are a well-coached team. Not only did they move the ball well, they displayed a strong soccer sense with good ability to read the play. They had good movement off the ball, putting themselves into position to attack the net. They did so early and often, putting up over 30 shots against us.”
Coach’s take on Truman: “Again, I am proud of the ‘never say die’ mentality. Down 7-0 at the half, we knew we were not going to come back and win the game, but the focus was let’s win the half. They had a deep bench and rightfully so, the girls getting into the game were earning their varsity minutes putting up double digit shots in the second half and we held them at bay until just under 11 minutes when we conceded the first of two second-half goals. A lot of girls weren’t feeling well prior to the game, but they toughed it out for 80 minutes and you can’t knock the effort. Leading scorer and junior co-captain Gwen Marston has continued to make her mark on the defensive side of the ball, dropping back to play fullback over the past few games. She started the game at midfield but spent most of the game playing sweeper and stopper. In a game where fatigue really seemed to set in, freshman cross-country standout Madison Egan played 70 minutes, including the full second half, all outside midfield, a position that requires constant running. If it was up to her, she would have played the entire JV game that followed as well.”

The Indians have dealt with a couple long gaps between games in the early part of the season.
Despite going nearly a week between fixtures, CR North was able to generate plenty of offense in Monday’s conference win to start off a three-game week.

First half: “We started fast today and Claire opened the scoring from outside the box after a corner but after that Bensalem defended well and we got a little lazy and one dimensional. Late in the half I think our possession and pressure paid off and we were able to add more goals.”
Second half: “The second half was similar to the first, I thought we did some good things with the ball and created a couple of nice goals. Claire Kelly hit a good free kick for Ella Keeler to head in her first Varsity goal and then Clara Altier unselfishly laid the ball off for Peyton Perry to score after a good run from midfield. Sophia Mills and Maddy Lear combined for the shutout.”

The Bucks evened their record for the young season at 2-2 after Saturday’s non-league win over the Eagles.
Angie Lang scored the only goal the Bucks would need in the opening half, and in the second half, Alyssa Terry added an insurance goal.

Our midfield of Addie Hermann, Sophie Borgmann, Ella Barrett, and Amber Madden were workhorses going forward and backward. We asked a lot of them today, and they did a great job getting the ball wide to Angie Lang and Alyssa Terry, who were both creative going forward and each picked up a goal for their efforts
“We also got good minutes and hustle play from Abby Denicore, Ellen Gorman, and Stella Wierzbowski. Lena Hamilton helped us keep our rhythm and stretched their backline when we needed her to.
“All in all, it was a good team win for the Bucks.”
