The defending PIAA Class 4A champs picked up where they left off last November, scoring often on their way to a big win.
Seven different Patriots scored, led by a brace from senior Ava Mignon, and six of the team’s tallies came with an assist. Senior Mia Forney had a goal and two assists, Mignon added a helper and both Mattie Williams and Delaney Ralph picked up a goal and assist.

CB East coach Jake Nesteruk: “Overall I thought it was a pretty strong start from us across the board. Really productive day across our starters and it shows in the diversity of the scoresheet and the level stayed pretty consistent as we rotated some kids in and out. First 10-15 minutes I think you could see some first game jitters but once we settled into possession and put the focus on winning the ball back higher up, we found a good rhythm to us.”
Keeping the pressure up: “Second half, I thought Rustin made some good adjustments to push at us more and with them stretched a bit, I thought our kids did a good job of exploiting some gaps that weren't there in the first half. Always happy to start the year off with a win, a clean sheet, and us finishing our chances well.”

Pennridge 2, Council Rock South 1
A strong combination between G Howley and Mikayla Loux helped the Rams overcome some season opening sluggishness and a resilient Golden Hawks squad on Friday.
Howley, a senior co-captain, set up Loux in the first half before the sophomore returned the favor late to tee up the Christopher Newport recruit’s winner. Even with both sides replacing some top names from last year, CR South was every bit in the match, tying the score early and giving the hosts trouble with their aggressiveness causing turnovers.

Pennridge coach Lucas Kriner: “Happy with the start of the campaign with a win but there’s a lot of work to do to refine our game understanding. Too many turnovers and conceding on a set piece right at the start of the second half is something we’ll be looking at. Legs and concentration should be fresh after the break. We’re fortunate to come away with a late winner off a nice goal from G on Mikayla’s assist.”

Neshaminy 4, Abington 0
A new-look Neshaminy team started its season with a quality win over Abington.
Needing to replace some key contributors in several spots across the formation, Neshaminy got a great outing from Leah Kaczmarek who had a goal and two assists. On the other side of the ball, Leah’s sister Lily helped lead the revamped defensive unit to a shutout.

Neshaminy coach Josh Van Reed: “The girls were excited to start the season. It is always tough to play Abington on their field. We had a lot of spots to replace on the team and talked about how everyone needs to step up when given the opportunity. It took a little bit to settle in and get into rhythm and Abington was defending well. About halfway through the first half, Anna Axenroth opened up the scoring when she took a ball off the throw-in and cut in and hit a really nice ball on frame. Then Leah Kaczmarek a couple minutes later added some insurance going into half when she got a through ball that split the defense, the keeper got a hand on it but she hit it hard enough that it didn’t matter.”
Keeping it up: “The second half, Abington started on the front foot and applied a lot of pressure. Our defense did a great job, holding up, closing down and making it difficult to score. We were able to add to our lead at the end of the game when Leah laid a ball off for Anna who hit another nice shot under the crossbar. And Leah did the same for Chloe Mougeotte who slid a ball past the keeper.”
Props: “I was really happy with our defense today. Emma Harrison and Lily Kaczmarek together in the back help give everyone confidence with smart consistent play. Offensively Anna and Leah had a great game working together. There are things to work on but I was happy with today’s performance.”

Springfield Twp 4, Conwell-Egan 0
The Spartans believe they have a deep squad this year and put it to the test early against a PCL side.
Springfield Twp, which returns a significant amount of last year’s SOL Freedom championship roster, rotated players in and out regularly as it split its four goals evenly around halftime. The team took a group trip to an overnight camp and the results of the extended team bonding showed early as the Spartans controlled both sides of the ball.

Spartans coach Chris Tomarelli: “The Springfield Spartans earned a victory over a well-coached Egan squad in a complete team performance. With all 21 players seeing valuable minutes, it was truly a total team win. The Spartans recently attended Independence Camp, where they focused on team bonding and building chemistry, and that work paid off on the field today.”
Standouts: “Defensively, Springfield was outstanding. Goalkeeper Olivia Gatewood was excellent in net, while June Kirk and Maddie Decker anchored the back line and helped keep Egan off the scoreboard to secure the shutout. It was a complete team effort and a great way for the Spartans to continue building momentum early in the season.”

The scoreline may not show it, but Friday was a productive day for both the Bucks and Tigers.
CB West had seven different players score a goal as the team takes on a new identity with a younger wave stepping to the forefront. Truman, with second year coach Brian Gilbert, didn’t score but competed all 80
minutes as the program continues to build a culture.

CB West coach Bree Benedict: “Really proud of how the team played today. Our goal is to continue to establish the traditional West identity with this young group, and today we played with a lot of joy and togetherness. Credit to Truman for a well-played game. They’re a well-coached team. We had a lot of contributors today, so it was a full program effort. It’s always a fun day when every goal comes from a different player. It shows our ability to score in different ways.”
Harry S Truman coach Brian Gilbert: “CB West has some shooters. They came out firing and hit the corners. Truman goaltender Dani Gilbert made double digit saves, but CB West still put up seven in the first half. CB West was a well-coached team and showed a lot of sportsmanship, rotating some younger players in the second half, which also enabled us to do the same. The Tigers had eight girls make their first ever regular season varsity appearance including: freshmen Amirah Fisher, Brennan Gilbert, Jaedyn Olds, Lily Hadfield, Nancy Montoya, Payton Morris and Vivienne Pauley as well as junior Bella Meyer. The girls gave the Tigers a lot of strong minutes, helping to hold CB West off the board in the second half.”
Culture building: “There was a JV game following the varsity game in which a lot of these girls had to turn around and play again in the heat. The true identity of this team was displayed during the JV game. The varsity team just lost 7-0, and hot, tired and exhausted, you might expect them to sulk or be down. From the bench, the varsity captains and upperclassmen were loud, cheering and chanting their teammates names the entire game! The support that they show for one another is amazing. There’s still a lot to learn on the soccer field, but the heart and character of these girls is second to none in my book.”

Lower Moreland 1, Archbishop Carroll 0
The Lions opened their season with a hard-earned win over a tough Patriots team.
Carroll is usually a physical side, but it was LM setting the tone with an aggressive and determined mentality that helped keep the pressure on. While goals were hard to come by, a nice connection between teammates featured some hustle and timely finishing to deliver the result.

Lions coach Todd Hill: “We kicked off the season with a nice win against a competitive Archbishop Carroll team today. I feel like we dominated play much of the game. Our girls played very aggressively and committed to winning 50/50 balls consistently. Goals were hard to come by today. Carroll's keeper (Grace Wilson) played a solid game.”
Finding a goal: “Our girls kept pressuring their defensive line over and over again throughout the game. With 29 minutes left in the game, the girls' relentlessness finally paid off. Sophomore Ella Fey sent a nice cross through the box that led to the ball bouncing around the goal mouth. Senior Shannon Mahon got a touch on it to sophomore teammate Evie O'Brien who placed it in the back of the net.”
O’Brien steps up: “Evie, who is a really talented wing player, has been tasked with a transition to play center back. She did a really nice job holding down the back for much of the game, with a few very dynamic stints at attacking wing.”
Props: “Among several strong performances today, two standout players included senior center back Izzy O'Brien and junior attacker Emma Leibert.”

Souderton 4, Boyertown 0
Cailee Cush, Hannah Beckett and Lily Heron led the way on the attacking end as Big Red opened the season with a complete victory under the twilight.
Cush scored twice while Beckett, a Providence recruit, and Heron each tallied a goal and assist. While the offense was dialed in, so was the defensive unit with Cam Lobel up to the task in order to register the clean sheet to start the season.

Souderton coach Melissa Lollar: “I felt our team came out as a solid unit and set the tone for the game early on. They were able to finish chances when they were given the opportunity and worked well together defensively for a strong team win. We had good efforts and leadership from our returning players and very promising performances from underclassmen. Cam Lobel had some key saves during the second half to earn her first shut out of the season.”

Faith Christian 2, New Hope-Solebury 1
New Hope-Solebury put itself to the test right out of the gate, taking on last year’s PIAA Class A champions.
The teams battled to a scoreless first half, then the goals started to come after the break. FCA bagged two in a two-minute span, but the Lions answered quickly. Unfortunately, New Hope-Solebury wasn’t able to find the equalizer but gave a state champion a run for the full 80 minutes.

The Golden Bears struck first, but couldn’t overcome a two-goal response by their AACA opponent in Friday’s opener.
It was a competitive 80 minutes and UM still had its opportunities, but wasn’t able to find an equalizer. The Bears defender battled, with keeper Gracie Costello putting together a strong showing between the posts.

We got on the scoreboard first when Eva Gorrell found Madeline Cox for a great header goal. Merion Mercy was able to equalize and then take the lead when they were awarded a PK in the twenty-first minute. We had some great chances and ball movement through the second half, but just could not get the equalizer. Overall for the season opener, we are pleased with the grit and determination the girls played with.”
