District 1 3A second round
#7 CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 8, #10 PENNRIDGE 6
West coach Elena Romesburg knew it wasn’t going to be easy.
Forget the fact that her Bucks’ squad cruised to an 18-9 win over the Rams in the regular season meeting between the two teams. She knew the second time around would be a whole lot tougher.
She was right. Although there was nothing to suggest it would be close after an opening half that saw the Bucks, who led 4-0 after one quarter, go into halftime with a 6-1 lead.
The second half, however, was a different story entirely as the Rams outscored the Bucks 5-2, but West held on for the win.
“It was an awesome rematch and it’s always fun to play Pennridge,” Romesburg said. “I knew it was going to be a harder fought win compared to last time. A lot of the players know each other, and I knew Maddie (Dachowski) was going to adjust their game plan after our first matchup.”
Olivia Barrett led the Bucks with four goals, three draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover. Adelaide Stromberg was a catalyst on defense with two ground balls and three caused turnovers. Ainsley Shissler had two ground balls and two caused turnovers to go along with three draw controls and one goal.

--Props: “Olivia Barrett led the team with four goals, three draws, one ground ball and one caused turnover. Pennridge really keyed on Ainsley Shissler who added a goal three draws, one goal, one caused turnover, two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Both players had phenomenal games in our first matchup.
“Kamryn Brownlow also had a solid game in the midfield, coming up with a clutch goal in the third quarter to stop a Pennridge run of a couple, and she also added a draw control, two ground balls and a crucial caused turnover in the fourth quarter.”
--Getting defensive: “My defense really stepped up tonight. Marleigh Mallon had a great day on the coming up with a ground ball and caused turnover and was a huge presence in transition. Evelyn Moore also had a solid night coming up with a draw control, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Addy Stromberg had a solid day also causing three turnovers and handled a lot of pressure in the midfield. Kendra Pitts was composed in cage and in the clear throughout the game.”
Up next: Central Bucks West will travel to second-seeded West Chester Henderson for a district quarterfinal game Tuesday. Henderson rolled to a 17-2 win over #18 Upper Merion. Pennridge closed out its season with a 15-9 record overall. The Rams were 9-1 in SOL American Conference play.

The Colonials were in Thursday’s second round game from the opening draw to the final whistle, but they never could get over the hump.
Playing no small role in that was the standout effort of Avon Grove goalie Kylee Mellott.
“She stood on her head,” PW coach Ellen Reilly said. “She had 13 saves and was very athletic in and out of the cage. She was the difference in the game. We had 12 shots on goal the first half and only scored three.”
The Colonials trailed 4-3 at the half, and they were outscored by an identical margin in the second half.
“We had a great season - it just ended too soon,” Reilly said. “The girls had a great season winning the league title and they had great chemistry and camaraderie.”
Maite Jayo’s hat trick led the Colonials’ attack. Soph Nagle’s four caused turnovers led the PW defense.

Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Ellen Reilly:
--The game: “Avon Grove jumped on us early, winning the early draw and capitalizing with a goal. PW had opportunities but had a hard time capitalizing against Avon Grove's goalie.”
--Midfield holds its own: “Midfield play was pretty even. Riley Martin had several draw controls and gave our midfielders opportunities to gain possession. PW midfielders Maite Jayo, Grace Harvey and Gracie Kerns, fought and hustled all over the field. They never gave up. We just couldn't put the ball in the net.”
--Getting defensive: “Defensively, PW played well. Avon Grove had eight shots on goal the first quarter, and PW only allowed them seven shots the remaining quarters. Soph Nagle had four caused turnovers and three ground balls, Esther Backenstose had two caused turnovers and was great in transition, Keira Whelan had two caused turnovers, and Kai Jayo helped in transition. Addi Stein played well in the goal and was steady in transition.”
Plymouth Whitemarsh – the SOL American Conference champions – were 10-0 in SOL conference play and 17-2 overall.

Forget the seeds.
Not a whole lot separated the two teams in this second-round district game. The Cards fell behind 4-0 early but rallied to even the score 8-8 at the end of three quarters. The Tigers held a 3-1 edge in the final quarter to eke out the hard-fought win.
Making life difficult for the Cards on attack was the 13-save effort of Marple Newtown goalie Rowan Hilden.
Senior Maeve Hogan led the Cards with a hat trick. She also had one assist. Bridget DiMartile led the Cards with six draw controls. Shannon Connaughton had four draw controls and three caused turnovers.

--The game: “Tough one tonight. Marple Newtown jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the girls fought back. We were finally able to tie the game up on a buzzer beater goal at the end of the third quarter. We just could not string together goals to take the lead in the fourth quarter.
“We never gave up. We challenge the girls every game to play with their heart and leave it all on the field, and tonight they did that. I am so proud of this team. We have a lot of young players that will learn from this and make them better.”
--Special seniors: “We will miss the seniors. Maeve Hogan, Ava Shohen, Lily Buckius, Ella McGuckin, Hannah Ellner and Molly O'Neal were great teammates and gave everything they had. It is always hard walking off the field for the last time.”
Upper Dublin closed out its season with a 14-6 record overall. The Cards were 10-1 in SOL American Conference play.
