Only two games remain in this year’s district tournament!
Today brings the third place game between #2 Methacton and #5 Souderton, and Sunday’s game ends it all; the 6A Championship game between Mani Sajid and #1 Plymouth Whitemarsh and ESPN’s #8 ranked Colton Hiller and #3 Coatesville in front of a sold out (in only 8 minutes) Hagan Arena crowd at St. Joe’s. It’s going to be a crazy weekend of games so let’s get into it:
#1 Plymouth Whitemarsh vs. #3 Coatesville: What a matchup this is! Two teams extremely experienced in big games that have duked it out with teams their entire playoff runs. Let’s first break down Coatesville. The Red Raiders are led by sophomore guard Colton Hiller. The 6’6’’ guard plays for the historic Nike EYBL squad, the PSA Cardinals in NYC and has college offers from UConn, Villanova, Louisville, and more. His commanding size, shooting ability, and basketball IQ set him apart on the court and have allowed him to be clutch for Coatesville this season. Beside Hiller’s large frame, the Red Raiders have been able to dominate opponents with their size, seen especially, in their recent game against #2 Methacton.
Let’s shift to PW. PW’s large range of size adds a lot of dimension to their game. With Penn-commit Michael Pereira down low and elite shooting ability from Towson-commit Mani Sajid, PW has broken down opposing defenses with quick movement and incredible spacing, allowing more players to get open looks. I feel that Coatesville could fall victim to their suffocating spacing as it was one of their weaknesses against #6 Abington and Methacton; they just had their size to cover it up on the other end, a strength that might go away against the Colonials. Additionally, when they played earlier in the year, their defense was in shambles because of the PW offense (a 71-58 PW win). Regardless, these two teams leave it all on the floor anytime they play and will make this a fun one. Give me PW for it all! 71-68 PW
#2 Methacton vs. #5 Souderton: This third place game will be a fun one as both teams are decently matched despite being overpowered by the two finalists on Tuesday. Both shot the ball well and fought hard through the bracket against some really high level teams. Methacton brings a lot of energy - from themselves and their wild atmosphere - and firepower onto the court as they shoot the ball incredibly well. Souderton is very similar and has been able to dominate teams as of late with that same innate shooting and hard defense that causes mistakes from offenses. I see Souderton coming into Methacton and giving them a lot of trouble on the offensive end. Give me Soudy! 65-63 Souderton.
Finally, as a girls basketball player and avid fan of SOL girls basketball, I wish luck to the all-SOL Girls 6A District One Final between powerhouse #1 Upper Dublin and dominant #8 Pennsbury. Congrats girls and good luck tomorrow!
