WARMINSTER — The chase for the Suburban One League boys golf title began on Tuesday at about 9 a.m.
When it ended about six hours later, Chase (Gillie) had finished on top. The Council Rock North golfer turned in a 2-over-par 73 to beat the field.
There were three golfers tied for second at 3-over 74. They were Zac DeVos of Bensalem, Kellen Toussaint of North Penn and Souderton’s Chase Andrews (There’s that name again).
Gillie had only one thing on his mind when the tournament started. He wanted to win.
“I came in thinking I was going to win,” he said. “I thought I had a chance.
“Then I made a seven on a hole, but I came back birdie, birdie, birdie and put myself back in it and then just slowly started to come to the finish.”
He wasn’t the only one who contemplated winning.
Toussaint just had a different slant on it.
“I mainly wanted to qualify (for districts),” he said. “I was hoping to come out here and win.
“I was playing pretty well and then on the12th hole, I hit OB (out of bounds which calls for some penalty strokes). It was hard to come back from that.”
DeVos didn’t come right out and say he wanted to win. Instead, he said, “I’m trying to get to states. That’s the big goal.”
Then there was Andrews. He was just trying to move on to districts.
“I didn’t have as successful a high school season as I wanted,” he said. “I just put it behind me and was able to come out today and hit some good shots.”
Actually, Andrews, who teed off on the 14th hole in this shotgun start, held the lead in the championship for quite some time.
He shot a 35 on the front nine, even though he began his day on the 14th hole. Starting on 14, he birdied his first two holes but then bogeyed both 16 and 18. But his even par start was good enough for the lead.
He added two more bogeys on the front but birdied six and seven to remain at even par. It was the first three holes on the back that proved to be his downfall, birdying 10 but bogeying 11 and triple bogeying 12.
Meanwhile Gillie, who started on one, was suffering through some problems of his own. He opened his round with a birdie but then bogeyed seven and triple bogeyed eight to finish the front at 38.
It was the back nine where he came alive. He birdied 10, 11, 12 and14 before finishing with bogeys on 15, 16 and 18.
Toussaint had his own difficulties. He had eight pars on the front, but the ninth hole (actually the eighth) was a bogey. On the back, he had one double bogey and one bogey to go with one birdie.
DeVos, who also started on one, began with a pair of birdies but then faltered with a bogey on four and a double on eight. He added two birdies on 12 and 14 but also bogeyed 13, 15, 17 and 18.
The Suburban One League was allocated 40 spots for the District One tournament. At the end of the day, there were 10 golfers tied for the final seven spots.
A playoff decided who would advance to districts and who would go home.
The District One tournament will be held on Monday, Oct.13, and Tuesday, Oct. 14. The boys will play both days at Turtle Creek while the girls will play their first round at Raven’s Claw and then their second at Turtle Creek.
